Ep. 158 Menopause Supplements: Why You're Throwing Money Away

You started with magnesium because you heard it helps with sleep. Then ashwagandha, because someone mentioned cortisol. Then creatine, because every woman over 40 is suddenly being told she needs it. Then a menopause blend, probiotics, a greens powder, collagen, something for metabolism.

You're spending $150 to $300 a month. And you're still tired.

Most of that is money down the drain. Not all of it, and I'll tell you exactly what I take and why. But the supplements women buy and the ones they actually need are almost never the same list.

Here's the problem with buying off a symptom. The same symptom can come from a lot of different places. Fatigue in perimenopause could be not eating enough, low protein, blood sugar swings, poor sleep quality, iron or B12 status, a medication, chronic stress, a thyroid nobody has checked, or muscle loss if you're on a GLP-1 and not strength training. Pick a bottle off the symptom alone and you're guessing.

In this episode I walk through how a supplement list gets that long, why it isn't your fault, and then I go through all seven of the menopause supplements I take and the reason behind each one, including why the collagen powder in your kitchen probably isn't doing anything.

I also share a client who did the opposite of what most women do. She came to me in full burnout, fresh off a week away from work for her mental health, strength training, on bioidentical hormones, and taking exactly one supplement. I could have handed her an impressive protocol on day one and I didn't, because I didn't know why yet. What we found instead was that she was averaging two meals a day. Two months later she pitched a $100,000 proposal she hadn't been able to finish, and she was still taking the same magnesium she walked in with.

In This Episode, You'll Learn:

  • Why buying a supplement for a symptom is guessing, not fixing a cause

  • All the different things that could be behind "I'm just so tired," including two nobody checks

  • Why muscle loss on a GLP-1 can show up as fatigue

  • Why you keep adding bottles and never take any away, and why that isn't a discipline problem

  • The seven menopause supplements I take and the reason behind every one

  • Why magnesium isn't actually a sleep supplement

  • Why the form of your collagen matters more than the fact that you're taking it

  • Why creatine isn't the problem, but the way most women buy it is

  • Why your body may not be absorbing much of what you're paying for

  • Where supplements fit in the Metabolism-First Framework

  • The client who was taking one supplement, and what happened when nobody added more

  • A simple supplement audit you can do this week
